August is a great month. Not only if you’re heading to one of Europe’s best beaches, but because summer sales start popping out whilst the trends are still hot.
Now is the time to check those wishlists you’ve made on your favourite high street retailer sites. If you’re worried you might overspend on garments which you won’t have time to wear before autumn arrives, follow these tips on how to make the best of the summer fashion sales…
Avoid one-off trend pieces
Even if you’ve been dreaming the whole season about that colourful mini dress decorated with tassels and pom-poms, unless you’re heading to a festival or hitting the beach next week, you better stay away from it. Chances are you won’t have time to wear it and will have to leave it for next summer, when it simply won’t look cool any more. Certain quirky trends pop up each season and quickly go out of fashion, so don’t waste your money on such items at the end of season.
Choose quality over quantity
I know a scroll through the Topshop sale can get you a basket full of goodies, but with sale shopping the rule “Less is more” applies fully. Look at designer sales as an investment and opt for quality pieces which otherwise you wouldn’t be able to afford. Choose inspiring garments from your favourite labels and designers that you will enjoy in the long term.
Go for wardrobe staples
Think of the season ahead and go for clean and classic silhouettes that you can style with the rest of your clothes. You can get a breezy off-the-shoulder top and wear it as a work-wear shirt, as long as it’s an office appropriate print. An elegant dress from the Ralph Lauren sale can be worn for different special occasions in the seasons ahead.
Get the right size
As obvious as it may sound, always buy the right size for you. There’s no point in getting a super tight dress with the idea that next summer you may lose weight. It won’t be an investment if you can never wear it, right?
Sign up for newsletters
It’s a good idea to sign up for the mailing lists of your favourite designers or a collective website which selects the sales from the most popular fashion labels. Most of the online retailers make announcements first via emails to tell their loyal customers of the coming sales, so you can shop amongst the first bargain hunters.
